PGA, USPGA and LPGA Social Media Review – week 14 2012

Congratulations to Hunter Mahan winner of the Shell Houston Open and to Thorbjørn Olesen winner of the Sicilian Open. This win was a well deserved maiden victory for Thorbjørn, for Hunter this was his second victory of the 2012 season and a great way to prepare for the US Masters.

On the LPGA Tour Sun Young won the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills.

On the social networks the clear winner this week was the Shell Houston Open. The tournament was supported with a very active website, a Twitter account with 3,459 followers and a Facebook page with 2105 fans.

The Kraft Nabisco Championship performed really well, with 1,971 followers on Twitter, and a comprehensive website, but was let down by broken links to a Facebook page that didn’t seem to exist.

The Sicilian Open had a web page that was located on the back of the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort website. The venue has a Facebook page with 3184 fans, but strangely there was no mention of the tournament at all apart from a brief announcement message posted in January. The resorts Twitter account repeats this experience with the most recent Tweet of any kind being the brief announcement dated the 14th January.

As you can see from the #Tag data charts, even though the Shell Houston Open Twitter account, @shellhouopen, published far fewer tweets, their effective reach was 11 times greater than that of the Kraft Nabisco @kncgolf Twitter account. Of course the USPGA has a huge Twitter following and will have skewed the results, but even allowing for this, the USPGA tour event was this weeks clear winner.
