Nedbank Golf Challenge Social Media Report

Week 1 of the European Tour 2015 and the action has moved to the southern hemisphere to South Africa and the Nedbank Golf Challenge. This is Gary Player’s event and the social media team did well to make sure he was included in much of the content, including my favourite image shred on social media!

The tournament had a really nice looking website. They have done well to highlight social media and fan interaction three times on the front page without making it seem too intrusive. It is also good to see that site design is Responsive, which means that when viewed on a smartphone or tablet, the website format changes to ensure that the visitor has the optimum viewing user / viewing experience.

As you can see from the graph, the Nedbank Golf Challenge Twitter account managed a healthy increase of around 300 followers (10%) during the course of the tournament to 3,080.

The Tweet activity explains why there was an increase in followers. In the preceeding 3 weeks of the tournament, the Twitter account was publishing just one or two tweets a day. During tournament week this shot up to an average of 34 per day. A sure fire indication that tweeting will get you new followers.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge also have a very active Facebook page with 27,912 Likes (at the time of writing) which is a pretty impressive number for a European Tour event. There was plenty of content being posted during the tournament week, and the social media team struck a good balance between on course and off course content. There were a lot of images posted which makes sense as golf is a visual sport and golf fans can get the news stories from anywhere – publishing images from the tour event gives fans an extra insight.

A VIP viewing gallery had been set-up by the 1st tee. The great Gary Player was in attendance and greeted players as they prepared to start their round. This photo encapsulates the moment perfectly with one tour great paying homage to the legend, the Black Knight!

How do the Tour events compare this week?

The Nedbank Golf Challenge was competing with Tiger Woods comeback at the Hero World Challenge. The PGA tour event had it’s own website and Facebook page with 7,064 Likes. The Hero World Challenge only posted 10 updates during the week, strangely enough most updates focused on Tiger Woods!

I think the Nedbank Golf Challenge won the social media game this week.
