1 year to go until Ryder Cup 2014

ryder cup 2014 twitter statsIt’s hard to believe, but in just 52 Fridays from today the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Scotland will tee off.

Back in 2012 we published an infographic about how the 2012 Ryder Cup was being played out on Twitter – you can see it here: 2012 Ryder Cup on Twitter

Today we publish the first infographic for the 2o14 Ryder Cup. As you can see, the European team Twitter account has over 5,000 more followers than Team USA.This is a complete change from the last Ryder Cup when Team USA had more than 3 times as many golf fans following them. But the real big surprise that both accounts have added around 30,000 followers in the last 18 months.

This huge increase is absolute proof that golf fans around the world have adopted social media as a prime news resource to follow whats going on in the world of golf.

The situation between the two team captains could not be any more different however. Paul McGinley (@pmggolf) has only tweeted twice (yes two tweets) but somehow managed to garner 3,353 followers. Tom Watson (@tomwatsonpga) on the other hand, has tweeted 57 times and gained 36,062 followers. I suspect that these statistics will change dramatically over the next 52 weeks.

I will be keeping a close eye on how the 2014 Ryder Cup is played out on social media over the next 12 months. Subscribe to my newsletter if you want to get the latest updates on how the teams, the captains and the sponsors are using social media to engage with golf fans around the world.
